Wilhelm Karmann Pre-Production Phase

German Craftsmanship & Refinements 1960-61

In December 1959 Carrozzeria Ghia handed-over the prototype T34 Coupe to the metal masters at Karmann.  They started fresh with drawings, partial designs, and then built a wood buck in full-scale to develop the sophisticated shapes of the body.

You can see as the pre-production phase continues that the headlights were in a constant state of redesign. The side vent under the quarter panel did not last.  And even until the last phase of design you can see the Type 14 parts fitted to the new Type 34.  And the interior photo clearly shows the engineers had not come close to finishing the seats, dash, & interior panel designs.
